The young Sandford Fleming saw many neighbours leave for the New World, i.e., the colonies of British North America. Families dreamed of wide open spaces, getting a good job and acquiring inexpensive land.
Sandford convinced his parents to let him go to Canada with his brother David. Adventure beckoned! The two boys were travelling as emissaries: if all went well, the rest of the Fleming family intended to make the same journey.
