Rapid, effective communications, all across Canada, or even… throughout the British Empire: this was the goal that Sandford Fleming worked tirelessly throughout his entire life to achieve. Trained as a land surveyor, the far-seeing Fleming dedicated his time, expertise, energy and talent to the advancement of railways, the laying of a trans-Pacific communications cable, even the creation of postage stamps.
He suggested innovative solutions to the challenges faced by a rapidly developing country, in order to link isolated communities scattered throughout a vast territory and – a very important goal for him – to unite the British colonies.
Energetic and unshakeable in his convictions, Fleming left a mark on his adopted country.
